Here at the Gallery we try to maintain a small inventory of made up Conch Pearl items. Most of these, because of the rarity and uniqueness of conch pearls, are individual, custom designs and the price reflects this. The only exception, currently, is the sea horse, for which we have a mold and we can reproduce it in yellow, white or rose gold and sterling silver. The largest pearl that does not overpower the gold is about 5 mm. There are practical considerations when designing jewelry for conch pearls. The most important is the hardness of conch pearls. Unlike akoya pearls they are not easily drilled, even with diamond drills. This means that one does not have the luxury of drilling and glueing the pearl to a post. Bezel setting is possible, but most conch pearls are so baroque that this technique is not often viable. The same can be said for prongs. In order to show as much of the pearl as possible, here at Conch Pearl Galleries, we are very appreciative of the properties of modern epoxy glues. To keep the pearl safe we try to design the pieces with the largest possible surface area to be glued, while maintaining an attractive design. We have also come to understand that the person who wants a piece of Conch Pearl jewellery is, usually a rare commodity who wants to design the piece for themselves. Naturally we offer this service, but unless you have to have time to spend here on the Island, we understand that, often, of necessity, you will choose your trusted jeweller. This is why we try to keep as large a selection of loose Conch Pearls as we can. | ||||||
