Kathy Hura

Kathy Hura, one of Abaco’s finest artists, draws her inspiration from the sea. Her vibrant acrylic scenes of reef fish seem to swim from the walls into the living room of her hill top home in Cherokee Sound as though it were an aquarium. Some paintings have fish swimming from the canvas onto the frame, further enhancing the realism of her work. Driftwood frames from worm eaten wood washed up on the shore add to the feeling of being part of the underwater scenery, as though you’ve been transformed to another world.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Kathy arrived in Little Harbour aboard a broken down sailboat in 1984. She was immediately taken with the family of sculptor Randolph Johnston of Little Harbour. She was a nurse by profession, and in the late 80’s, after Ran had a debilitating stroke, Kathy became a nurse and aide for him and his wife, Margot. Her art is a beautiful depiction of Abaco sealife and proof of her undeniable talent, even though she has no formal training and did not start painting until 10 years ago.

Kathy is an up and coming artist who is making a name for herself very quickly. Her beautiful and realistic scenes of marine life under the waves around Abaco are in great demand.
